Tinder Passport: Does a Profile's Location Prove Where Someone Is?

Updated

No. A location on Tinder does not prove where someone is. Tinder Passport lets paying members search by city or drop a pin and connect with people there, and they can change cities as often as they like. Bumble Travel mode and Hinge's manual location setting create similar gaps, so treat a location as a clue to verify.

What is Tinder Passport?

Passport Mode lets a Tinder member search by city or drop a pin on a map to connect with people in that place. Tinder sells it as a standalone purchase and includes it in Tinder Plus, Gold and Platinum.

Tinder says a member can virtually be in one city at a time and can change location as many times as they like. In places where Face Check is required, they must complete it to use Passport there.

Why might you see a profile from far away?

Tinder gives several reasons a distant profile can appear, and none of them tells you where the person physically is.

  • Passport: they may be using it to look at people in your area.
  • A recent change: people they Liked while using Passport may see their profile for up to 24 hours after they change location.
  • Your own settings: Tinder may show people slightly outside your distance preference, mostly when it runs out of profiles within your range.

Do Bumble and Hinge work the same way?

Not exactly, but a location can mislead on both.

  • Bumble: phone GPS normally sets a member's location, but Travel mode, for Premium and Premium+ subscribers, lets them appear somewhere else for 7 days. Bumble says it adds a travel mode banner to the profile. The city they live in is a separate profile field they can edit.
  • Hinge: members can type in a location or move a pin on a map. Hinge says it does not update location automatically, so a profile can keep showing an old place after someone moves or travels.

What does a location on a partner's profile tell you?

Very little on its own. It may be current, old, chosen on purpose or simply a setting. It does not show that they went there, met anyone or used the app recently. It also does not show that the profile is theirs, or that it was made during your relationship.

Can a public search show where someone used an app?

No. CheaterExposer searches public web results on Tinder, Plenty of Fish, Match, Badoo, MeetMe and Tagged, plus public profiles on major social networks. It does not search Bumble or Hinge. It cannot see app activity, private accounts, messages or deleted accounts. Results link to their source and are rated confirmed, likely or possible. A result is a lead to verify, not proof of cheating, and no result proves nothing.

What should you do if a location worries you?

If you feel safe doing so, ask a plain question: is this your profile, and is it still in use? Show what you saw and leave room for an explanation. If you are afraid of how they might react, put your safety first. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available at 800-799-7233 or thehotline.org. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone fake their location on Tinder?

Tinder's own Passport Mode lets members choose a city or drop a pin and connect with people there. So a location on a profile does not prove the person is physically in that place.

Does Tinder Passport cost money?

Yes. Tinder says Passport Mode is available as a standalone purchase and to subscribers on Tinder Plus, Gold and Platinum.

Why is someone on Tinder showing up in my city when they live elsewhere?

Tinder says a distant profile may be using Passport to look at people in your area. A profile can also appear for up to 24 hours after a Passport location change, and only to people they Liked.

Does Bumble have something like Passport?

Yes. Bumble's Travel mode lets Premium and Premium+ subscribers appear in another place for 7 days. Bumble says it adds a travel mode banner to the profile and does not change the member's actual GPS.

Does Hinge update location automatically?

No. Hinge says it does not automatically update location, so members must change it themselves. A Hinge profile can therefore show an old location after someone moves or travels.
